2/19/16: Missing, Africaine 808, Palms Trax, Kidnap Kid

@@@ Missing No: Fones (XL, 2015).  An A-list electronica tune off the Apple Music playlist.  It’s a mash of sci-fi bleep action, wambly synths and dreamy female vocals.  Over  a beat that is a tad chopped and a tad clubby.  The singer sounds like she’s 4 years old and the best parts of the tune is the deep bass line and the sci-fi pinging bleep shower.

@@@ Africaine 808: Basar (Golf Channel Recordings, 2016)  Another featured electronic recording on the Apple Music electronic front page.  Opens up with synth horns and a hand drum.  And strings!  This first tune has a bit of a jazz fusion/prog vibe going with an orchestral vibe.  The second tune, Ngoni, features a ngoni loop with more hand drums and synth bass and synth squirts.  I like this combination of instrumentation but I wish it was less restrained and funkier.  This is mild manner flavored coffee electronica.  The third tune finally starts to push the tempo and the funk.

@@@ Palms Trax: High Point on Low Ground (Dekmantel, 2015)  A four on the floor club banger also off the Apple Music electronic page.  Pretty standard unt-ss beat, some R2D2 robot bleeps, an electric piano vamp and a tiny chopped vocal sample for your human contact.  I think the melodies are pretty grade school stuff but when you’re all hopped up on MGMT and legal weed, nobody gonna care….

@@@ Kidnap Kid: Moments (Birds that Fly, 2016)  Last tune of the day off the Apple Music electronic section.  Best arrangement of the day — very slick shuffling beat with some really nice arpeggiated piano.  The vocals, on the other hand, are a bit New Age/Phil Collins.  The lyrics are not full cheese fondue but it’s a grilled cheese sandwich to be sure.  There’s some tasteful string work towards the end of the track but I just can’t abide by the vocals, they make me feel cheap.
