@@@ The 1975: Somebody Else (Interscope, 2016). A mainstream pop single — his girl found somebody else. That’s sad and what’s even sadder is how he’s drowning his sorrow in a horrible 1980’s pop arrangement. It would be cleaner for all of us if he just hung himself as we wouldn’t be left with this cheesy residue. Fantastically shiny cheese, but diary none the less.
@@@ Jonathan Emile: The Lover/Fighter Document LP (Mindpeacelove, 2015). Some electro hip hop off the CFUV weekly email. A sung chorus in this first tune so it’s got a r&b element to it. Emile has a strong voice and his lyrics are conscious. The second tune called Movement Music has West Indian dancehall sounds. I like his voice and his lyrics, but I’m not super into the arrangements.
@@@ Florist: The Birds Outside Sang (Double Double Whammy, 2016) Some lonesome, forlorn guitar indie also off the CFUV weekly email. Let’s hope things perk up on this second tune, I’ve had enough mopey white folks music to last a lifetime. We’re opening up slow on this second tune, I Was. These are confessional, biographical lyrics with simple rock band arrangements. The end of this second tune gets points for a simple and solid arrangement. And while I fully recognize the suffering involved in the human condition, sometimes this mopey, downer music brings me down. I can’t really deal with this singer.
@@@ David Vassalotti: Broken Rope (Wharf Cat, 2016) Slotted as lo fi on the All Music weekly notable email, it’s probably not. The first tune opens up with some floating granular synth sounds panning around over a watery blip synth and acoustic guitar strums and a church organ. Oddly enough the second song morphs into an updated Velvet Underground sound with simple rocking musical elements and his reverbed out voice. The third tune pushes forward the drum machine and the synth hooks, so it looks like this record is going to be a pu pu platter of various musical styles. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s not really my style.
