2/13/16: Greg Porter, Amon Amarth, Deceiver, J. Sutta

@@@ Greg Porter: Liquid Spirit (Porter/Universal, 2016).  I read the Lefsetz letter, written by music biz honcho Bob Lefsetz.  He just sent out a post about this musician so I thought I would check him out.  He’s got a superlative voice.  As with many mainstream jazz records I kinda hate the sound of the record.  So soft and bourgeois it’s almost painful to listen to.  Big hall reverbs on Porter’s voice, on the sax, just no grit whatsoever.  The second tune is straight outta New Orleans and the song is about water so Katrina y’all.  I can see how this might work live.  I bought a vinyl edition of one of Aretha Franklin’s first records and the raw energy on that record is mind blowing.  This is the opposite of that, the energy is smoothed and packaged in cellophane wrap.  Great voice though.

@@@ Amon Amarth: First Kill (        , 2016).  Off the A-List Metal playlist off Apple Music.  It is a mix of classic metal riffage, thrash/arena drumming and a singer that rocks a combo post-rock/caveman vibe.  The song gets into an outro regarding the singer’s outcast status and it’s al right but I’m not putting my horns up for this tune.

@@@ Deceiver: Tombs (        , 2016).  Ah well the playlist continues to the second tune, so fuck it let’s check out this tune although I thought the #1 tune on the playlist was a bit of a wang.  This song has a nice punk guitar grind and a hard rock drum sound.  They’ve distorted the singer’s vocals to make him sound more demonic.  Oooh, I’m scared.

@@@ J Sutta: Forever (Premier League, 2016)  An urban pop/club banger off the Apple Music front page.  Panting female, synth goodies, and a beat that morphs in a closet dancehall vibe with bleeps and kick drum.  It never really explodes, which is fine, has some nice sounds but not super memorable.
