2/12/16: .Paak Anderson, Brothers Osborne, Conrad Sewell, Jack Garratt

@@@  .Paak Anderson: Malibu (Steel Wool, 2016)  Some art school/hippie r&b off the Apple Music emerging artist section.  Anderson sports a classic voice and I hear some Curtis Mayfield in there.  The second tune, Heart Don’t Stand a Chance, is a bohemian read of a Roots tune, at least the intro.  I don’t like that tune very much so we’re skipping ahead to the third tune, The Waters.  It’s more of a modern r&b tune with a lot of vocals and that certain drum machine like sound I can’t put a good finger on.  More reminiscent of a D’Angelo tune than old school.  It’s just preference I can see how lovers of this more recent sound would dig this.  Solid B.

@@@ Brothers Osborne: Pawn Shop (EMI, 2016).  Another record off the Apple Music emerging artist section.  The first tune is called Dirt Rich, which is not full on undercover arena rock, but there are certainly pop production sounds here and an overall corporate smell to the music.  And that’s cool but I just prefer the music of folks that bathe less rather than more.  This is like Sheryl Crow music with a bearded hipster and his cute sidekick instead of Crow.  The second tune gets more into the cheesy big rock — he’s thinking of his old girl.  Poor fella, no girl and trafficking in country cliches, that’s gotta be rough!  Have you noticed that every country song mentions girls in cutoff jeans and female hair blowing in the wind riding in their pickup trucks?  You can set your god danged watch to that shit!  Exclamation points during negative reviews!

@@@ Conrad Sewell: All I Know EP (300 Entertainment, 2016).  Another emerging artist from Apple Music!  He’s got a light voice that doesn’t benefit from the huge reverb patch they put on there.  And the string swells and the serious piano chords.  And the full choir, oh my!!!  This is dramatical and might require a handkerchief.  I’m about to move to another record because he’s doing that panting/orgasm breathing thing.  I don’t just not like that style of singing, I fucking hate it.  He wants to start again with his love but he’s layered so much cheese into this tune that I don’t give a shit what happens.  I made it 2.5 minutes into that tune, that’s pretty good.  The second tune has Michael Jackson electro-pop sounds in it.  Finger snaps, gated snare sounds!  Now the tune has morphed into a combo MJ/Earth Wind ‘n Fire mash.  He’s pretty much biting Jackson’s vocal style (and even the melodies!)  I’d rather watch two drunk people build a house out of dirty diapers.

@@@ Jack Garratt: Worry (Island, 2016).  An empty bed sad song off this Apple Music emerging artist section.  I was about to say how I appreciate the minimalist arrangement when the double synth plus-percussion-drum machine chorus came blasting down Broadway.  Garrett sounds a bit fragile in the lonely folk singer neighborhood with a dash of blue-eyed soul.  He’s got a Stevie Wonder pube up in this track.  It’s an all right track though I find the synths in the chorus to be too loud and the sad party vibe in this section is a tad askew.
