@@@ Wet: Don’t You (Sony/Capitol, 2016). Also off last week’s All Music notable release email. Opens up fluffy with a macaroni and cheese synth and a lone female voice. Then it opens up to more voices, some chill and skittery drum machine action and more synths. More synths, hmmmmm. Ponging and cotton candy synth blankets. This is slotted as indie electronic but this is mainstream teen pop. Don’t call me a genre bitch. This has shopping mall rat written all over it. Woof. And as I leave this record you folks who make and market this shit should call it what it is and be proud of it. You’re halfway calling it a dirty diaper full of shit by slipping it in to some other genre. If you love cheesy pop shit be a man/woman and wave the flag.
@@@ Ty Segall: Ty Rex (Goner, 2015). Off this week’s CFUV playlist email and me thinks the Ty Rex is supposed to be some sort of homage to T Rex. Dirtier but catchier and mostly rock interested in this first song. A tad of modern day glam in the vocal melodies as well. The second tune continues the riffage filtered through a dirty psych lens. On the GoogleTube (ah the clip below) says something about reissue. I know Segall is an indie darling and he’s a busy indie darling as well but I don’t really have the desire to look up to see if this is a reissue of an earlier recording. Pretty tasty guitar work here as I type and it gets more and more retro as it unfolds.
@@@ Tedeschi Trucks Band: Let Me Get By (Concord, 2016). Some mainstream blues inflected rock off last week’s All Music notable releases of the week email. This first tune could come right off a ’90s Bonnie Raitt record. Smooth production, nice playing, and a lack of grit. The second tune Laugh About It has the same vibe but is more interesting with a shuffling dream beat and a short but memorable bass line. This record is aimed right at the heart of aging baby boomers who want to rock. It’s solid musicianship but it’s so polished smooth that I’m nodding off.
@@@ We Hunt Buffalo: Living Ghosts (New Damage, 2016). Some heavy music off this week’s CFUV weekly playlist email. Opens up epic and more than a bit stony in this first tune with a small repeating guitar figure doing its thing underneath a slow big shred. Oh there’s your head crush right there. More hard rock than metal. I’m thinking the singer is gonna be the big rock leather pants wearing kinda fella but he’s stiff offstage in this first tune which has switched over to some power chord action and big drum toms. There he is and as predicted. Oh, he’s losing his shit somewhat in the third tune and I likes it more. Still mostly an stoner, arena rock sort of affair but at least they got some tempo going here.
