@@@ Lusine: A Certain Distance (Ghostly Int’l, 2009) I saw a twert on the Twerter by a random dude claiming this is an album of the decade. I’m always on the lookout for high quality electronic music and this album has both some nice abstract sounds and a tad of a New Age feel. At least to the first tune. Beats are light funky. I bet some folks X’ed out of their minds at a club saw Jesus in this music. The second tune is a bit more abstract with a chopped loop female voice/s, but that New Age vibe is still baked into the sound. Some of the production here is super sophisticated but I wish it hit harder.
@@@ Rihanna: Work (featuring Drake) (Roc Nation, 2016). I read a long article about Rihanna’s new record and how there aren’t any hits on it. This is the single, I guess, and it has Drake on it, and Drake is my homie. He’s got a pool in L.A. bigger than Dre. This tune is a mid tempo banger with a sparse arrangement. I can’t wait for Drake to hit the mic. I like the uncluttered arrangement, oh fuck here’s Drake in full loverboy mode. He’s so hot and skilled. The tune has some interesting elements to it, but it’s not super memorable.
@@@ The Joy Formidable: The Last Thing on My Mind (C’mon Let’s Drift, 2016). A seven minute tune off the Apple Music. After a bit of random vocal wanking they get into a descending riff over a classic rock beat. Sultry female singer, guitars panned wide, I don’t like the singer too much, the sexy is too upfront so not so sexy. This is no rocking Pat Benatar she’s a low energy vixen. As I often end up writing about mainstream music very predictable rock sounds/cliches here. If the singer started singing about how much her ass itches I would sit up and take notice. Or some bagpipes.
@@@ Cocofunka: Chucaro (Self-released, 2016). A super poppy world music single off this week’s WRIR world music playlist email. I had to hit the search engine as this tune is not a recognizable mash of sounds that doesn’t reveal a geographical location. These guys hail from Costa Rica and they combine reggae, pop, soft indie music and maybe a tad of funk. Lyrics in Spanish. I don’t love the guitar sound but it’s breezy and spring is coming.
