2/1/16: Drake, The Cadillac, Aevangelist

@@@ Drake: Summer Sixteen (Cash Money, 2016).  A new banger from the overrated Drake.  Nice skittering beats and a swirly arrangement.  He’s got skills on the microphone, but he sounds soft.  It’s worse than that — he knows everybody thinks he’s soft so he raps with other folks’ perceptions of his softness in mind.  I guess Drake has house in L.A. and he’s got a bigger pool than Dre.  Nasal rapping butter boy.

@@@ The Cadillac Three: Graffiti (Big Machine, 2016)  Big Machine is Tay Tay’s label so you know this new country is all about Dollah Bill.  More undercover arena rock with country music pubes spreaded over it.  It’s a bit weird that the subject of the lyrics is all the graffiti they used to spray all over the town.  They don’t sound black or Latin.

@@@ Aevangelist: Enthrall to the Void of Bliss (20 Buck Spin, 2015).  This is some dissonant heaviness that I got to via this week’s Aquarius Records email.  I have to seek refuge with the freaks after listening to a couple of mainstream tunes.  The problem with the bulk of the mainstream music I listen to is how predictable and boring it is.  I’m open to liking a Drake tune, but he starts in with his fake tough guy bullshit and his money penis and I hate him.  And that new country cheese dinger by the Cadillac Three — life’s too short for that shit.  And maybe for this record too, oh wait.   After an almost interminable opening to the first tune which was just a lot of aimless threedling, the metal beast has risen, the orc is singing and the caveman is grunting.  The second tune, The Cloister of the Temple of Death does not fuck around and gets right to the savage sonic ass wallop.  There’s an inordinately high degree of dissonance to the music on this record that is both annoying and interesting.  It’s a bit of a three legged dog — beautiful in its perseverance but also more than a bit fucked up.  Bazinga!
