@@@ Hippo Campus: South EP (Grand Jury, 2015). Some Christian mainstream rock that is on the Apple Music front page. If you took Death Cab for Cutie, Vampire Weekend and Mumford and Sons and put a Jesus head on those three bands, it would sound just like this record. I’m not a huge indie fan, but to throw the J-Man in there really doesn’t push this music in my direction, but it’s good to see how folks roll.
@@@ Wet Ink: Relay (Wet Ink, 2012). I saw an email announcement of upcoming shows as the new club Sawdust here in the BK and saw these guys were playing there so therefore I peep. This is some classical improv with a female singer, polished production. Instrumentation is strings, horns, flute, piano and vocals in this first tune. This is highbrow business. The second tune is less highbrow and weirder with a spoken word section and some interesting sparse playing. I had the opening track clipped up here for your earhole pleasure, but this third tune is much better and more interesting imho. I’m liking this record more as it unfolds.
@@@ Brooke Waggoner: Widow Maker (Swoon Moon Music, 2016) A single from the All Music weekly notable release email. This musician has some sort of association with Jack White, which I don’t know if I think that’s a positive or negative. Jack’s rock star trip is a bit tiresome. Waggoner has some blues in this tune, but also has stranger lyrics and a pop sensibility. It’s just under 2 minutes and it’s more interesting than Mr. White’s last opus.
@@@ Bloodiest: Bloodiest (Relapse, 2016). Also off this week’s All Music notable release email. Apple Music has these guys described as experimental extreme music which is quite a fricking mouthful. The auto speller changed fricking to fracking, oh there it goes again. Fracking, yes! Digressing, digressing. This isn’t your standard Linking Park art school/glam metal as it’s not clammy. Arty punk that’s more prog metal than punk. This first tune is a bit too math-y for my taste, but let’s peep some more. This second tune has a long dual guitar mellow intro and I might be nodding off or getting back into the whole fricking/fracking thing. That tune was almost 8 minutes of mellow and I got shits to do, so I will wrap this up. The third tune is opening the same as first — a bit heavy, a little ambient, a tad metal and a tad proggy. Not my thing but if it’s yours I won’t tell anybody.
