1/16/16: Pig DNA, Chris Stapleton, Living in Hell

@@@ Pig DNA: Mob Shity (La Vida Es Un Mus, 2016).  Some bands throw some noise in the ol’ listener earhole and it’s halfhearted.  This outfit, Pig DNA, which just garnered the Aquarius Records’ Record of the week will blow your brain out of your skull if you don’t administer the doses carefully.  Yikes.  Think Lightning Bolt but cranked up on meth infused Red Bull.  Hardcore punk and noise fused together in a dirty furnace.  I think there’s a band under that there blanket of noise.  Yeeeooowwwwww, hold tight while they put it on you.  Dook-tastic!

@@@ Chris Stapleton: Traveller (Mercury Records, 2016).  I like to think I can flow between the sounds of a rank McDonald’s fry-o-lator and the smooth Glenn Campbell soft rock-country that you find on this record I peeped up on the Apple Music.  I’m not a big fan of this style but Stapleton didn’t wuss out in the chorus and he sounds like he might have broken a sweat.  Very rare in the new country scene.  The second tune, Fire Away, is a slow rocket to the moon fueled by hickory smoked redneck cheese.  I like the slide guitar player and Stapleton’s voice helps to drive the record out of muck.

@@@ Living Hell: Oblivion (Eulogy, 2009) A 2009 doom metal record that’s been issued on vinyl so somebody out there must be feeling it.  The first tune strikes a pleasant balance between mid tempo drum bashing and big spilling guitars.  Oh, the singer has made his appearance and he’s got a strong, post-hardcore pissed thing going on.  I can see why this record has been reissued on vinyl it’s pretty smoking.  They moved pretty slickly from that epic, stoner doom to some thrash spanking and back again.  Skills people, don’t try that at home.  I’m on the fourth tune and it’s pretty clear these guys know how to put metal tunes together in a creative and engaging way.  Imma gonna swing back to this record when I have time and I hope you check these dudes, they’re killing it.
