@@@ Father John Misty: I Love You, Honeybear (Sub Pop, 2015). Mr. Misty gets a lot of love from the indie peckerheads. I think he has some skills, but as with most indie situations there can often be a slathering of hype sauce that can overwhelm a talented musician.
This first tune has some Beach Boys faded flavors, particularly in his vocal melodies and the orchestral amount of instrumentation. This is the title track so it’s the king biscuit-gem of the record. The second tune, Chateau Lobby #4, is more of a folk pop nugget and I don’t hate it but it’s a little cloying in the way that late ’70s soft rock can most definitely be. The third tune heads out onto the indie electronic highway. And this is where I hop off this record. I’m not surprised that this record made year end lists, but it will not make mine. List, that is. Misty shines best when he’s got a good vocal melody going, oh this third tune sucks.
@@@ The Arcs: Lake Superior (The Arcs, 2016). An indie moper with some trippy effects action off the Apple Music highlights page. Think Wilco with a cold. The singer needs a strong cup of coffee and a slap up side the dome. Pavement drummer tempos and guitar opens up the chorus a bit. Good right before you fall asleep.
@@@ Raekwon & Kabaka: Be Inspired (Walshy, 2015). One of the Wus teamed up with a dancehall toaster doing a blaxploitation type of track. Fuzzy guitar riff with some horn splashes and even cowbell. Fuck, more cowbell, always more cowbell, especially on hip hop tunes. I like how the vibe changes when it goes from rapper to toaster. This is a pretty New York City tune, man Imma hungry for a roti right about now.
