1/6/16: Dr. Dre, Alborosie/King Jammy, Nathi

@@@  Dr. Dre: Compton (Aftermath/Interscope, 2015).  Off the Apple Music front page and let’s just give a shout out that Jimmy Iovine (Interscope’s founder) and Dr. Dre are Apple employees and it sure as shit looks like a conflict of interest for Apple to have Dre’s record posted prominently on the front page of their streaming service.  Classic music biz mafia action.

I skipped the intro and head right into the second tune Talk About It and I’m surprised at how this tune is not gangsta at all.  Not that gangsta is required but the vocal break in this tune is pretty cheesy.  Next tune.

This third tune, Genocide, features rap god Kendrick Lamar.  I like the opening part of this arrangement.  Funky beat with a hot descending bass line.  Cali style funk but a very intricate arrangement.  This tune is much higher quality than the previous one.

The third tune, It’s All On Me, harkens back to 1970’s black soul but in a ballad style.  I will give a few quick clicks through the next tune, but this is looking like a pu pu platter of tracks with a cornucopia of guest singers/MCs.  A tune in this style and a tune in that style.

@@@ Alborosie (featuring King Jammy): Dub of Thrones (VP Music, 2015)  I’m searching around to see if this is a re-issue, and it looks to be a collection of new dubs.  A reviewer fingers the fifth tune, Rise Up Dub, as the fattest dub on the record and I would concur.  It is sticky indeed and posted for your earholes below.   Some of the King Jammy beats sounded oddly modern and stupid.  This dub below is quite fine, please check it out.

@@@  Nathi: Buyelekhaya (Mutha Entertainment, 2015).  Off the world music section of Apple Music.  This is a mash of African music, fusion jazz sounds, and orchestrated vocal choirs that you often find on mainstream African music records.  Soft skittering drums, some guitar noodling, soft pillowy organ pumping mellow for Nathi’s voice, which is great but I can’t handle the arrangements.
