Ellen Jewell: Sundown over Ghost Town (Signature Sounds, 2015)
In an age of sonic excess and wanker-ness this understated and tasteful alt-country record is a breath of fresh air.
No oversinging, no Bon Jovi whoa dos, no handclaps or tambourines or all the other shit I can’t stand.
The band is tight and the tempos are mostly slower and the songs are forlorn. This is not the kind of music that is played at the shopping mall so the horny teenagers can nod their heads while they buy blue jeans.
It’s also not pretentious or too art school, it’s just a woman and a band playing a bunch of songs.
God bless America.
