Omar Souleyman: Bahdeni Nami (Monkeytown, 2015)
Smoking and funky music out of Syria. Seven pieces, six of which are over 5 minutes long and Souleyman will spin you around the dance floor until you drop.
He’s got help from Four Tet duder and also a gent that works under the name Modeselektor, and while the production is good it’s the relentless circular melodies and the uptempo funk that is the core of the record.
All you white hipsters out there doing your disco redux on both the listening and the manufacturing side should peep Mr. Souleyman. You gotta a lot to learn, he burns up the dance floor.
