Shannon and The Clams: Gone By the Dawn (Hardly Art, 2015)
This record doesn’t do two of the things that I hate most about today’s indie music.
First off, it recognizes the existence of black music. They play an early to mid ’60s style of r&b and they swing all right for white folks. Special shout out to the guitar player who does a really good job of catching ears.
Secondly, the vocalists are not detached and flat as a purposeful pose. They’re really into singing and by putting some love and energy into the vocals they bring the listener more deeply into the record. Check out the track below, It’s Too Late.
It’s not a copycat r&b record. They inject some psych twinges that all those kids out there love these days.
The video for the track, Telling Myself, is very good example of the energy they bring to the tunes. Check these guys out.
