@@@ Monica: Code Red (RCA, 2015). Some new r&b/funk/hip hop off the Apple Music highlights page. Nice big ass bass, and Monica’s flow on the mic is quick and mixed with extensive background vocals. I would describe the production as dense and skitters — turntable scratching, swirls of vocals, some electronic blurps, and blips, and an uptempo beat. The tempo drops on the second tune but the dense production continues on this hip hop/soul ballad. She only has a selection of tracks up for streaming, and the third tune I’m hearing (the fifth tune on the record) is a slower, even more dramatical ballad.
@@@ Seven Sisters of Sleep: War Masters (Relapse, 2016). A single off an upcoming heavy music full length. A pleasant mash of metal and post rock and hardcore. This single is a mid tempo beast sporting a hard rock drum sound, epic guitar sounds, and a somewhat punky singer. Also a nice glaze of stoner syrup heah. They’re gonna take their time drilling a hole in your head and you’re gonna enjoy the relaxed pace — fewer bone chips and less blood sprayed around.
@@@ Stove: Aged Hype (Exploding in Sound, 2015) Oh, this dude has definitely studied Kurt Cobain’s playbook. Load up on guns, bring yer friends, people. So 90s you can almost see Monica going down on Bubba J. Clinton. I would stick with Bleach myself, but if you want to give this gent some love….
@@@ World Champion: Tip Pit (Future Classic, 2015). Some indie music influenced by black music, imagine that! Slinky beat, falsetto vocals, some classic soul rhythm guitar with soft rock guitar solos over that. Not overtly poppy, which I appreciate. It expands and gets a little flabbier as the song rolls on, but any indie that even acknowledges the existence of black music is a step ahead for me.
