11/24/15: Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Arca, The Brainstems, Elephant 12

@@@ Unknown Mortal Orchestra: Multi-Love (Jagjaguwar, 2015).  Some super intimate baroque indie I got to via an indie music blog.  This first tune has rich, processed vocals with…and here it has morphed into some indie electronic with a tad of funk.  A bit like TV on the Radio but more mainstream.   The second tune goes straight for an early Prince pop funk-rock bite.  I would suggest if you like this sound go straight to the mothership and hit up Dirty Mind and 1999.  For real, people shit on Prince but he picks records like this one out of his stool.

@@@  Arca: Mutant (Mute, 2015).  Some progressive electronic off the Beats highlights page.  After a slow descending synth huff we get some old school drum ‘n bass beats sped up.  It sounds a bit like what you would imagine life in an ant colony to sound like.  This is quite a jittery pile of synth lasagna, this first piece.  Let’s check out more.  The second tune is the title track, opening with thick bass pulses and some processed high end drill-like sounds.  It’s pretty abstract and more than a bit grating.  I know this guy is big and has worked with Fucka Twigs and whatnot, but I don’t find these pieces to be very focused and engaging.

@@@ The Brainstems: Time to Ride (Bad Diet, 2015).  Some crunchy garage indie I got to via a music publicist.  Dual guitar attack, a nice old school bass sound, and that deadpan singer sound.  I like the interplay between the two guitar players and the drummer is doing all right keeping it running on time but I could use a little more energy from the singer.  Check for yourself, I’m an idiot.

@@@ Elephant 12: Green Light Go! (Hellophantastic, 2014).  A multi-genre mash of hip hop rhymes, power punk guitar, and funk rock drums.  Very Rage in the Machine.  Plus a little synth action.  Also some Living Colour shred from the guitar player.  I think they’re working a good formula but it’s not quite as fierce as I want it to be.  Maybe they need some meth and/or Red Bull to pump it up.
