11/18/15: Mutemath, Sugarplum Fairies, Martin Courtney, Frankie Cosmos

@@@ Mutemath: Vitals (Wojtek, 2015).  The blurb on the Beats highlights page says these guys pull from several decades of alternative rock but I hear a few pubes of white boy disco and a ton of 1980’s synth rock.  Falsetto vocals, some funk guitar-lite and pretty standard kick-snare beats in this opener.  Let’s skip ahead and see if we can hear any other decades.  The second tune is an electro ballad/love song with burbling guitars, the same white boy out front.  Regular readers know how much I hate being lied to.  Boo hiss — come get your 1980’s synth cheese rock.  Call it what it is and be proud of it yo.

@@@ Sugarplum Fairies: Suddenly, Starfish (Starfish, 2015).  Music that straddles folk, indie and 1970’s soft rock that I got to via an indie music blog.  If the Velvet Underground this combination of sounds they would sound like these guys.  I appreciate the female singer for keeping it simple and tasteful.  I like it all right, but check it for yourself and it seems to be rockin’ more as it moves but it’s still pretty sedated (not bad sedated like the record below).

@@@ Martin Courtney: Airport Bar (Domino, 2015).  An ode or shout out to 1970’s mellow rock like Gerry Rafferty that I got to via a show announcement for the super hip new space in Brooklyn called National Sawdust.  Also more than a schmear of Alex Chilton in this tune.  A lot of guitar jangle, a fairly spaced out voice and a simple rock rhythm section.  That’s pretty much it.

@@@ Frankie Cosmos: Fit Me In (Bayonet, 2015).  Some slack hipster electro off the Beats highlights page.  The first tune is called Korean Food and I guess they regret having it.  Standard kick snare vanilla beats with a minimalist bounce bass and a somewhat sedate female voice.  It’s only 4 songs, stay awake if you can!
