@@@ Noisem: Blossoming Decay (A389, 2015). After a little drone intro these guys get right into thrash with a tad of hardcore and classic metal. I thought it was a tad soft until they hit the switch and they’re burning it up purdy good now. The singer is almost understandable — no caveman, no opera singer, etc, he’s mostly hardcore. Quite a nice start and this second tune, Burning, gets right into the bashing. The drummer is on a variety of substances — red bull and crank maybe? They’re all tearing it up, but as I always say if you got a shit drummer you ain’t going nowhere and this guy is driving the bus. Imma gonna swing back on this rough nut. I’m blogging at night here and I can’t listen too much to this or I’m not going to be able to sleep as this will really pump your shit up pronto.
@@@ Goldlink: And After That We Didn’t Talk (Selection, 2015). Some hip hop with credentials off the Beats highlights page. I guess he worked with Rick Rubin on his last record. This first tune is pretty hot — fresh sounds and some strong rhymes. I don’t usually like the hip hop that’s up on the Beats highlights page, but I find the sounds really fresh and I’m listening to his lyrics, which is not usually the case. I prefer this record to the huge one by whatsisname Kendrick Lamar — this guy is sharply focused where I thought Lamar’s record had some interesting sounds but it wasn’t all tied together. Imma gonna swing back on this record — he’s got a lot sounds going here and they work together. Some Prince, some Stevie Wonder funk, other black musics and hip hop.
@@@ Billy Gibbons and the BFGs: Perfecatmundo (Concord, 2015). I’m not sure if I’m ready for Billy Gibbons without the rest of ZZ Top and from the sounds of the first tune I’m correct to not be ready. He’s sporting his classic guitar tone, but the rest of the band is not the workingman’s foundation that ZZ Top Dudes 2&3 is. Frankly the drummer sounds kinda pussy. If you’re looking for the wine spritzer version of ZZ Top and you’re not man or motorcycle mama enough for Deguello or Tres Hombres stick with the lite, low calorie Billy Gibbons.
