@@@ Matthew Logan Vazquez: Austin EP (No Label, 2015). Slacker alt-country that opens up with a delayed snare protruding interestingly in the mix and what could be described as singing/whining. When Vazquez starts singing proper I like it more, with more than a teaspoon of Dylan nasality. This tune smells a bit like a slowed down Knockin’ on Heaven’s door. This first tune Austin is gonna roll for a while so Imma gonna skip ahead. The second tune opens up with some electric guitar and more uptempo — he’s still sporting the Dylan vibe but he’s got some rocking goin’ on. He uses a line ‘you look good in slavery’ — that’s a nice turn of the pen. He’s really pushing his vocals which is rare in these very Republican post 9/11 era. We’re onto the breezy vibe on the third tune, Halfcolt. I don’t like everything about this record but I do like his lyrics and his delivery and I can see folks diggin’ on this record.
@@@Maka – Mu Na Gi (You & I). An independent r&b single with heavy hip hop influence I got to via a music publicist email. Beats are high in the mix, some simple vamped guitar chords and a Nigerian female vocal. Fugue vibes in the beats to be sure. Refreshingly not slick but well done.
@@@ Allen Licht: Halsema, First Love (Not sure, 2015). I got to this tune off a link on a twert. It’s a solo acoustic guitar tune, heavy on the strummed chord voicings and harmonics and less on picked out melodies. Very pretty tone.
Try this link here, I think it will work.
@@@ Cold Fronts: Radio (Sire, 2015). A mainstream rock single I got to from a music publicist email. Loads of produced vocals that trigger ELO feelings all served up on a standard rock rhythm section and a bed of poppy and crunchy rock guitar. If you don’t like the vocal arrangements (and I don’t really) then you won’t dig the tune, and the opposite as well.
Stream it over heah.
