11/6/15: Chris Jansen, BOSQ, Counterparts

@@@ Chris Jansen: Buy Me a Boat (Warner, 2015).  Some pro-capitalism new country I found on the Beats highlights page.  Money can’t buy you love but it can’t buy this homie a boat.  Even Warren Buffett gets name checked — fuck me hayseed!  If this is the title track I’m expecting a slide down the hill from here.  Next up the Power of Positive Drinking.  It opens up with some puss guitar riffs and the clever lyrics just keep coming exploding with a god dang ode to the Power of Positive Drinking.  Color me shocked and amused.  The third tune is redneck ballad where he humps his sister.  It’s an ode to packing up the pickup truck and just taking off — maybe fleeing the law for humping your sister (or not).  Wow, 12 million hits for the title track/ass squirt below!

@@@ BOSQ: Celestial Strut (Ubiquity, 2015).  A compilation I saw on last week’s CFUV weekly email.  It’s gonna be Latin music Imma guessin’, but I’m no Kanye.  The first tune is a cumbia with electronic elements.  My browser spell Nazi changed cumbia to cambia so I guess nobody at the Apple spaceship knows what cambia/cumbia is.  White boys!  Nice bass and high end horn titilation in this first tune.  The second tune Bounce and Pull Up is a percussion heavy instrumental with small vocal urgings and then a pretty rockin’ baritone sax solo.  God bless the motherfuckers keeping the baritone going.  The third tune, Ella is a salsa jam and the temperature is not boiling but it’s no lukewarm indie rock biscuits being served here.

@@@ Counterparts: Tragedy Will Find Us (Pure Noise, 2015).  Some muscular punk that has 1 1/2 feet in the hardcore/post-rock neighborhood but employs some sounds from the heavy metal sonic palette.  The singer has the end of his ropes tone of voice — there’s some metallesque guitar grinding and while there are a few waves of distorted arpeggiated guitar there’s no shredding to be had here.  The drummer throws down a lot of hardcore/thrash business but he also dabbles in the ‘kick drum to the head’ tactic.  I’m getting used to the singer’s flow and his barking desperation comes off as emo intentions and not as a pose.
