@@@ Varg: Rottkapchen 2015 (Napalm Records, 2015). Some Northern European circus-y pogo metal off the Beats highlights page. Let’s move to the second tune because the first one is kinda shitty. Well, get out your Oktoberfest mugs and your Viking helmets and stomp all over the beer hall to the fine strains of this ____-fest. Sausage, boot stomp, beer and cheese, party metal…. all those word combos would work with – fest to describe this record.
@@@ Deerhunter: Fading Frontier (4AD, 2015). Described as a woozy psych-pop masterpiece, oy that’s a mouthful. He’s also described as experimental and that’s just not true as he’s very straight ahead. The first tune All the Same is a pretty straightforward rocker with a few Lou Reed pubes thrown in. The second tune is an even straighter arrow — let me take a moment here to rant. This is not experimental, or woozy, it’s indie pop with a big marketing bow on it. It’s not awful, it’s okay, but I start to hate on it when it’s served to me as something it’s not. When I go to a restaurant and ask for a burrito, I always get a burrito. Not with the music business. Call me crazy but there can be such a thing as truth in advertising.
@@@ Dan Friel: Life (Thrill Jockey, 2015). Some electronica from the mainstay Chicago indie that I got to via the All Music weekly email. It opens up sine wave-o-licious like a drunken synth swerving but not bit crushed and distorted. That may be for this second tune which opens up pulsing quickly with drum beats, drunken line melodies from the last tune and a generally upbeat and poppish vibe. It sounds a bit like the record Mapmakers by Parts and Labor — in spirit and lighter. It’s crunchy, it’s poppy, it’s had a lot of coffee but no crank yet.
@@@ Son Little: Son Little (Anti-, 2015) Another release I seen on the All Music weekly email. The first tune is a bit hard to describe — phasered vocals, some delayed mini-shredlets of guitar, some vibe like percussion and a pong synth. Downtempo, but not trip hop funky sort of indie-ish. The second tune gets into a artsy, torch neighborhood with a touch of Beach Boys Cali lonesome. With a drum beat! I give props to the mash here. I’m not sure how much I love the tunes, but I dig the arrangements and the sounds.
