10/12/15: Kowloon Walled City, Dirty Street, Hunny

@@@ Kowloon Walled City: Grievances (Neurot, 2015)  A noise rock biscuit off the Aquarius Records weekly email.  The first tune is sewage sludgy, big rolling guitar distortion and oh, check out the big drums and the agonized singer.  Sweet.  I don’t consider this noise rock myself, but I will not be a genre bitch.  It’s mopey punk, you bitches.  Pretty heartfelt and cheeseless, at least on this first tune.  Rides the line between stoner metal and slack punk.  A very engaging slow tune, the title track (clipped below) — the mix sounds great, and Imma gonna have to roll back on this badboy when I have the time.  This third tune, Backlit is off to a real nice slow cooker pressure crusher — these guys is f’real.  Check ’em out, support ’em they gonna make my year end list.

@@@ Dirty Streets: White Horse (Alive Naturalsound, 2015)  I try to peep the Alive Naturalsound releases because I dig the white trash blues/punk they traffic in.  I don’t love everything they excrete but they do solid work.  This is a heavily riffed late ’60s hard blues/Led Zep style track off an upcoming platter.  Not the toughest track ever, but certainly more muscular than those Black Keys bitches.  I like the drummer most of all, he’s cutting the beats tight and all right.  I dig the guitar player but I could use more freak swirled into his riff action.  The singer is all right, but I could have used less of the vintage Eric Clapton almost drowning in reverb.

@@@ Hunny: Pain/Ache/Loving EP (B3SCI, 2015).  Some super ’80s Duran Duran style rock with a super mopey singer — oh, he’s bumping it up in the chorus.  Good for you, duder.  I hate the bass sound, the drum sound, the way the guitars sound, and I’m not super feeling the singer.  That doesn’t leave a lot to hang on to.  Oh, this dude owns mad Cure records.
