@@@ Moontaxi: Daybreaker (BMG Music, 2015) Described as a jam/alternative act on the Beats highlights page, and I hear a bit of the jam but I don’t hear much alt and I hear a pretty mainstream band. I have little advice for bands except if you play mainstream rock be proud of it and don’t market yourself as something else. I hear handclaps, I hear Bon Jovi-esque background vocals. Just bite the Bon Jovi wiener and be proud of it. Oh no, the second tune brings on the Death Cab for Cutie — that’s not good in my world. The cheerful optimistic rock feels like a rope around my neck. Ah well, if this corporate rock biscuit sounds good to you check it out.
@@@ Buckman Coe: Malama Kai’Ana (Tonic, 2015). Some smooth roots influenced reggae soul off this week’s All Music weekly email. Big horn section, strong vocals but not classic reggae. Coe plays the uke and the sweetness of Hawaiian music is present along side the reggae sound. While I appreciate Coe’s melodic singing and the full production, myself I like a more muscular rhythm section but hey that’s just me.
@@@ Djds: In the Flames (Concord Loma Vista, 2015) A slightly trippy electronic looped mama off the Beats highlights. That intro ambience gives way to your classic kick snare/clap with some processed vocals and a sporadic climbing synth bass line. I find the overlapping looped vocals to be somewhat interesting but it just sits and spins. Not that I need the explosive EDM snare roll/money shot, but a little more development.
