@@@ Andy Mineo: Uncomfortable (Reach Records, 2015). Some Christian hip hop/electronica off the Beats highlights page. The sounds are interesting with funky beats and some electronic burps and some organs/angel voices panned out to the sides to give the undercover church vibe. I can’t say I really understand what he’s rhyming about in the first track/title track Uncomfortable. He sounds Q-Tip-py on the second tune, Uptown. The third track brings in a cheesy vocoder sound to the arrangement and the vibe turns from funky to I’m not sure what adjective. Not more Christ-y, but cuter and less funky.
@@@ Qwanqwa: Volume 2 (FPE Records, 2015). Some world music I got to via the WRIR weekly playlist email. I hear a violin, an electric guitar with wah wah, but I don’t hear a specific region here. According to the blurb on the label page here, it’s three gents from Ethiopia and a caucasian violin player. This first tune Gelani is a mid tempo groove with some interlocking electric bass and guitar work. It’s cool but I long to hear an explosion. The second tune, Kemeke, is more uptempo with more action. Although I tend to gravitate to the super burning African music, the gait of this record is growing on me and I’m going to circle back and check it out more when I have the time.
@@@ Turnpike Troubadours: Self-titled (Bossier Records, 2015). Country roots rock off the Beats highlights page. Plenty of growling guitars to go with the fiddle, but a more plaintive voice than your Garth Brooks new country mule biscuits. The second tune, The Mercury is more of an uptempo rocker with a shuffling beat and more urgency. It’s very manicured production which leaves the tunes a bit sterile, but if you want a step down from the full new country nugget, have at it.
@@@ Dilly Dally: Purple Rage (Partisan Records, 2015). Some retro ’90s indie guitar crunch with a gravelly Courtney Love voice with occasional dissatisfied vocal spasms to go with the Breeders/Pixies flow of the track. I got to this via a music publicist email.
