9/21/15: Han Earl Park, Baio, Blessthefall

@@@  Han Earl Park: Anomic Aphasia (SLAM, 2015)  We start out the week with some improvised noise that I got to via a tweet by the musician.  He is a guitarist, there’s another guitarist as well and a couple of horn players.  There’s a clean guitar, a dirty one — this is only the trailer for the record as I could not find it on my streaming store, but the improv is jagged and tight and the general vibe is restless and energetic.  I would like to hear more, but this could work well for metalheads out there who could use a break from the double bass drum assault.  It’s good to switch up the noises you use to assault yourself.

@@@ Baio: The Names (Glassnote, 2015).  Some indie electronic off the Beats highlights page and they just love it all to hell how it combines indie, electronic and new wave.  This guy is the bass player for Vampire Weekend and he’s headed out on his own.  I can’t say this first tune is making jump up and down.  It’s got the requisite un-tss un-tss beat with chopped up diva vocals and some guitar squirts and synth clouds mingling in a quirked indie fashion.  The second tune is less of a club banger, more of an ’80 synth pop/rock hard tack biscuit.  I can see this working for cubicle dwellers — it’s got a non-threatening hopefulness that keeps people working.  For real.

@@@ Blessthefall: To Those Left Behind (Fearless Records, 2015).  Some big metal off the Beats Highlights page.  The record opens up with the tune Decayer where we have the scream in the verse/sing in the chorus thing going on.  The guitar is a blend of melodic riffing and big slabs of percussive blessing.  I know the singer sounds very upset but this doesn’t raise my blood pressure adequately.  It’s a step above art school metal, but the parts with singing dilute the pissed sections.  To my ears at least.
