9/19/15: Future, Ellie Goulding, My Dying Bride

@@@ Future: Deadly Sprite 2 (Epic/Freebandz, 2015).  I saw that the king of hip hop Drake is making a mix tape with this dude.  The first lyric on this record is ‘I just fucked your bitch in some Gucci flip flops’.  I’m not sure if that means the bitch was wearing the flip flops or if Future was sporting flip flops.  Mr. Future has an interesting syrup-y feel – there’s definitely a delay on his voice but I can’t tell if they did something else to it to make it stoned out as he makes multiple references to codeine and the purple drank.  The beats are skitter-y Southern in flavor and the production in the first tune sound like trippy little exploding stars.  The second tune, I Serve the Base, takes the tempo up a few notches with a dueling bass lines — a pulsing jeep bass with a chainsaw synth bass swirler and similar references to the Activas purple drink and bitches.  I’m gonna peep this third track that has Drake on it.  I like the arrangement a whole bunch but despite Drake’s monetary success I still don’t enjoy listening to him rhyme.  The production is pretty hot and he can rhyme, but the lyrics are ignorant as fuck.

@@@ Ellie Goulding: On My Mind (Cherry Tree, 2015).  A single produced by Max Martin who I think is way hyped.  Ms. Goulding has had a lot of bass chopped out of her voice and sounds more than a bit like an 11 year old.  The song opens up into the chorus which features a skitter and a an interesting melody that works against the beat.  I wouldn’t denounce this as crap it’s just electro pop heavily influenced by ’80s sounds and it goes in one ear and goes out the other end into the toilet.

@@@ My Dying Bride: Feel the Misery (Peaceville, 2015).  A doom metal record I got via this week’s All Music notable release email.  The first two tunes are titled ‘And My Father Left Me Forever’ and ‘To Shiver in Empty Halls’ — I hope these guys are getting some therapy when they’re not on tour.  Big classic metal singer, operatic and dramatical with big guitar riffage and a hard rock drum sound.  In the second tune the singer morphs into a disgruntled orc kinda fella and it changes the tone of the tune.  Not really my favorite style of metal.
