9/12/15: Gary Clark Jr., Hey Mother Death, William Basinski

@@@ Gary Clark Jr.: The Story of Sonny Boy Slim (Warner, 2015).  This record off the Beats Highlights page is getting a big push all around the intertoobz.  The first tune, the Healing is a combination of mainstream rock sounds with some BB King tone-isn blues riffing in the back tinged with a tad of gospel.  The second tune, Grinder follows the same formula with some rock power chords, blues shredding and basic rock drums.  Clark can shred for sure but his rhythm section is short on funk.  It doesn’t have to be full George Clinton, but c’mon.  And right on time, there’s some funk showing up on the third tune Star — classic background vocals and a splash of funk in the drums.  If blues aficionados don’t know it, check it out Buddy Guy’s Sweet Tea from around 2001.  Just the first few tunes take Clark Jr. to school.

@@@ Hey Mother Death: Highway (Paper Bag, 2015).  Some dark indie I got to via the weekly playlist email.  The first tune, Highway, has a bit of a krautrock feel with sheets of guitar noise floating through with a super detached female voice low in the mix.  The second tune, The Hills continues with the same formula — minimalist beats, throbbing but not nasty bass, lots of guitar noise and the mental hospital female.  I would call this Bellevue indie — haunted a wee bit off kilter and maybe a tad delusional and a pube of OCD.

@@@ William Basinski: Cascade (Temporary Residence, 2015).  A single tune off a full length banger.  Heavy on the shimmery ambience and processed piano sounds.  It’s a long unfolding piece of business so take your purple cough medicine, kick back and just chill.
