@@@ Publicist UK: Canary (Relapse, 2015). Some heavy music I got to via a music publicist email. In the chorus the singer sounds like a disgruntled office worker working himself up to a mass shooting, and I thought the chorus would bring the smackdown but it remains sorta detached and a wee arty. Don’t get me wrong, I like art. Big production, big drum sound with thick rock bass and squirtly guitars arpeggiating their little asses of at the side of the mix. Four minutes in the singer finally loses his shit — man, I want my smackdown early so I can get more smackdown as the song unfolds. Maybe they’re a self hating outfit and they only mosh a little and with hesitation.
@@@ XA Ambassadors: Renegades (KidInaCorner/Interscope, 2015). A mash of genres, oh no wait it’s just boom titch with synth sauce. Well it’s more than boom titch, it’s boom ta-ta-titch so it’s no completely wooden but the hook ‘we’re living like we’re renegades’ — I wouldn’t say it’s stupid because that would reflect poorly on me, but I find it unconvincing. They praising renegades like Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick — what a weird lyrical nugget to find in a club track. Steven Spielberg is no renegade — E.T. ain’t no renegade, that little alien freak can’t even find his way home. Jaws, oh a mean shark that eats people. You see I’m distracting myself from the corporate whackness of this track by going down the Spielberg rabbit hole. EDM biscuit heah, get your EDM biscuit head!
@@@ Amy Bezunartea: Something to Show You (KIAM, 2015). A single off an upcoming full length player I got to via a music publicist. First off I want to commend Ms. Bezunartea for retaining her name — that’s quite a mouthful and she could have easily travelled the Zimmerman highway. And now on with the tune — a sparse tune with minimalist elements. That sounds like a nylon string guitar, a couple of piano plinks, a few loping bass notes, and a little backward weshing sound. It’s not a downer tune but it’s intimate and feminine in nature. You know, feelings and shit. She wants something to show you and I don’t really know what she’s referring to — it’s obviously not a club banger where she’s gonna Miley Cyrus show you everything. I’m going to say she feels unaccomplished and would like to do something that is uniquely hers and show it to you. I don’t know if there’s money involved or if it’s a gift.
