9/10/15: Quarter Street, Connie Constance, Ariel Pocock, Little Boots

@@@ Quarter Street: Quarter Street (Hope Street, 2015).  Some old school salsa with an emphasis on vocal arrangements that I got to via the international section of the CFUV weekly email.  This first tune, Fantasia, is hot — layered percussion, high energy, big swaggering horn section.  The second tune, Tumba La Cana Jibarito, is a burner as well.  Nothing like a record where you hit it and they just run you over.  The third tune is down a notch in tempo but opens up with a flavorful horn arrangement.  Oh boy, I’m going to have to circle back and check out the rest of this record as these guys are smokin’ on these first three tunes.  If you live outside of New York City and you’re not exposed to salsa coming out of cars and bodegas you should check this out.  Oh, nasty nasty horn solos on this third tune, these guys are killing’ it.

@@@ Connie Constance: In the Green (Black Acre, 2015).  A three song EP off the Beats highlights.  It’s a mash of influences with a sharp UK accent on the female singer.  It features some Autotuned vocals which I always associate with hip hop/r&b but this first tune Stars has more of a trip hop feeling with reverbed piano cords ringing out.  The second tune, Euphoric, is a downtempo electric organ tune that gets a little draggy.  There’s not a ton of pep until the first tune, Kingdom, which gets into an uplifting New Age hippie lyrical neighborhood.

@@@ Ariel Pocock: Touchstone (Justin Time, 2015).  Some straight jazz vocals off the CFUV weekly email.  I was not feeling great about the opener, Exactly Like You, until she started scatting and it’s pretty sweet.  Much more interesting than the lyrics.  I like the second and third tunes less than the opener, but if you dig straight jazz

@@@ Little Boots: Working Girl (Dim Mak, 2015).  Off this week’s CFUV weekly playlist email.   The second track, the title track, is a slick club banger with a smooth female voice whoa-ho-ing her way over pretty standard club beats and synth patches.  I can’t tell if I’ve heard this record before or if the music is pretty formulaic.
