9/9/15: K Camp, Air Waves, Joan Shelly, Iron Maiden

@@@ K Camp: Only Way is Up (Family Ties/Interscope, 2015).  Some West Coast hip hop with r&b mashed in that I got to via the Beats highlights.  Mr. Camp has a conversational flow on the mic — he’s medium gangsta and relaxed about it.  Camp raises the temperature on the second tune Till I Die with a more standard West Coast hard hip hop tune.

@@@ Air Waves: Fantasy (Western Vinyl, 2015).  A single off an upcoming full length I got to via a music publicist.  It’s a pretty straightforward mid tempo rocker with strummed guitar and a fragile female voice.  It’s pretty much without genre — not super mainstream, not roots rock, not indie.  Check it out even though I don’t have much to say about it.

@@@ Joan Shelley: Over and Even +3 (No Quarter, 2015).  Some old school folk I got to from last week’s All Music weekly email.  Same as the Iron Maiden record below.  Very sweet double acoustic guitar playing panned left and right.  The second tune is a duet with a mellow dude accompanying Ms. Shelley who has a classic folk voice — they get into some rock territory with some sinuous electric guitar melodies but it’s a chill Age of Aquarius type of record.

@@@ Iron Maiden: Book of Souls (BMG, 2015).  One of the most dramatical voices in the history of metal.  It opens up with a cheesy synth and delay on the voice on the intro before the band kicks in with a hard rock vibe.  I know these guys are epic but this first tune is pretty sleepy time tea.  The second tune, Speed of Light, starts out with a cowbell and then proceeds into a boogie rock riff.  I’m checking out the third tune, The Great Unknown, but I’m not super into this record.  Too dramatical.
