9/7/15: Dear Hunter, SG Lewis, Woolen Men

@@@ Dear Hunter: Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise (Equal Vision, 2015).  I get all the Dear bands mixed up — Deer Hoof, Deer Tick, Dear Hunter, and even Miley Cyrus’ hip hop project Dear Ballz.  I think the cue for this first tune, Rebirth, is the Beach Boys and Yes maybe locked in a fornicating embrace.  A couple pubes of Styx drama or Jethro Tull — art rock to be sure.  Oh boy, we’re really going down the prog rabbit hole on this first tune but we pull out of it and plop down in a swamp of hyper dramatical ’70s guitar rock with tons of vocals.  I’m on the third tune, Waves, and there’s just too much — too ornate, too many vocals, too artsy.  This is not dry, crumbly biscuit, this is a super buttery biscuit.

@@@ SG Lewis: Shivers EP (PMR Records, 2015).  Also off the Beats highlights page.  Opens up with the tune No Less, a purposefully murky slow r&b tune with light touches of all sounds — fusion-y guitars, mellow synths, finger snaps, and chill vocals.  This music has both a little cough syrup sedation and medical marijuana relaxation.  This would be some really good music for post-Thanksgiving sleepy on turkey listening.  Mad finger snaps, I don’t know what about fingers snaps annoys me but it does.

@@@ Woolen Men: Temporary Monument (Woodsist, 2015).  Old school guitar indie with a  proclaimer on the microphone.  Clangy, clean guitars with straight ahead rock drums.  Think Violent Femmes.  The second tune Life in Hell sports a different singer but the same angular guitar/bass/drums old school indie formula.  The third tune, Alien City sees the emergence of the distortion pedal which lends a little Ramones flavor to the proceedings.  Straight up classic power pop punk — if you like the straight missionary position, have at it.
