@@@ Dam Funk: Invite the Light (Stones Throw, 2015). Some new funk music off the All Music weekly email. The record opens up with a trippy spoken word sermon on the funk before heading into some West Coast style funk. It is mostly synth based funk on the opening musical number, We Continue with the exception of a brief guitar shred. There is a lead vocalist but he works with a large chorus of vocalists through the tune. The second tune Somewhere, Someday is an uplifting vocal track with a pretty straight beat and intricate background vocals. I like some of these arrangements but this isn’t my favorite style of funk. Check it for yourself.
@@@ The Arcs: Yours, Dreamily (Nonesuch, 2015) One half of the Black Keys. I will acknowlege that I have grown to fucking hate the Black Keys — their shameless repackaging of blues will earn them a place in Hell to be sure. But this is mo a rocker than a blues banger. This first tune has a full band, psych tremolo guitar and a rock feel. Good for you, one half of the Black Keys for cessating with the ripoff. I like the third tune Put a Flower in Your Pocket. This would be a good record for people who like the vibe of stoner rock without the super obvious stoniness of that subgenre.. This album could be sold at bong shops — that’s a friggin’ great merch idea.
@@@ Daniel T.: Tetrachromat (Young Adult, 2015). Some uplifting pop electronica off the Beats Highlights page. Bouncy synth bass lines (multiple), with some perc patches and even a wooden flute synth. The first tune crashed my Beats yo, so I’m headed off to the second tune, the title track. It’s another happy biscuit with a horse trot four on the floor beat with some electric piano, some thready cloud synth in the back and processed angel voices. Bouncy bass people, not funky but cute. This is pretty happy-centric music — it’s not straight booty club bangin’ but more for people who can’t let any sadness or bad emotion into the music they listen to.
