9/1/15: Fake Palms, Ruby Amanfu, Hag Face, Beartooth

@@@ Fake Palms: Fake Palms (Buzz, 2015)  Opens up with some nice punk noise – manic guitar arpeggios, a crushed detached voice and big ol’ rock ‘n roll drums.  The second tune, Sparkles, takes the distortion down a couple notches and the band enters downer rock country.  It’s pretty good, I’m not doing jumpin’ jacks ova heah.  I like the drum sound a bunch and the guitar player is doing solid work.  Off this week’s CFUV weekly playlist email.

@@@ Ruby Amanfu: Standing Still (Rival & Co Records, 2015).  I got to this singer/songwriter record via last week’s All Music weekly email.  This first tune, Anyone Who Knows What Love is has both feet in 1970’s singer/songwriter rock with an expansive feel, a vintage bass sound, and a generally super laidback feel.  Amanfu’s voice is showcased really beautifully on this first tune.  As we’ve said a million times, having a great first tune is not a huge deal.  The second tune, Where You Going features some tasty guitar playing and the tune sounds great.  The third tune is an ambient slow ballad, lots of reverb on Amanfu’s voice and some smooth organ and chill guitar.  I’m gonna check back on this record when I have the time.

@@@ Hag Face/Babysitter Split (Resurrection, 2015)  A full throttle blast of punk noise with a rabid female witch on the microphone.  It’s what it would sound like if Donald Trump made the beast with two backs with Sarah Palin.  An ungodly shriek.  Or if you don’t like politics if you a cat got sucked into your snowblower.  The second tune, Witch Stomp, is more of a Halloween stomper with the same wild woman on the mic and a tight guitar grind.

@@@ Beartooth: Disgusting (Red Bull Records, 2014) Some mainstream hard rock I got to via a music publicist email.  It’s on the Red Bull imprint so you know it’s gonna be jacked up.  I didn’t know Red Bull had cheese in it, but this record sure does.  The vocals are half tortured scream and half wank.  They sound a bit like Linkin Park jacked up on Red Bull.  They get a nice pogo going on the second tune, Beatin in Lips, and I’m struggling to connect this tune to some cheap smack about Red Bull.    I don’t like this singer and I can’t tell if he’s had too many Red Bulls or not enough.
