8/16/15: Palehound, King Thi’sl, Sweet Baboo

@@@ Palehound: Dry Food (Exploring in Sound, 2015).  Opens a bit like Wire and the Breeders.  Sharp, angular arrangement with panned female vocals.  Not going for the alienated, sharp krautrock feel but the sharp and a pube poppy to give the hooks a bit of edge.  The second tune, Healthier Folk, gets more into a dirgier Stone Temple Pilots retro grunge thing.  Skip ahead, this is a bit of a snooze.  The third song, Easy, has a nice climbing guitar figure but it’s more cough syrup/stoned.  Ah well, I like the first tune, it’s a nice brisk workout and it’s clipped below for your earholes.  Off the Beats Highlights page.

@@@ Thi’sl: Heavy Hangs the Head (Full Ride, 2015).  Some West Coast hip hop off the Beats highlights.  Mr. Thi’sl has a gravelly voice and his phrases swing back and forth over a crickety hi hat beat and a full mix phaser at points in the tune.  Lyrics are medium gangsta — dope slinging, some gun play.  I like Thi’sl’s delivery and this tune clipped below, Flex (Drop 40) is highly funky.

@@@ Sweet Baboo: The Boombox Ballads (Moshi Moshi, 2015)  Alt singer-songwriter music I got to from this week’s All Music notable releases.  Mr. Baboo is from Wales and he has a very pretty voice with solid lilt to it.  After a vox/guitar intro it heads into a more ensemble section with fiddle, accordion, tube (?) and back and forth til the song wraps up.  The second tune is more of an adult alternative love song.  I like soft lilting voices in strange musical contexts, but when he’s front of an adult alternative band it’s a bit cloying and aimed right at the heart of yuppies brunchers.  He heads back to the pensive folk work in the fourth song, but I wish he would sting with one formula or another.
