@@@ Novella: Land (Sinderlyn, 2015). This week’s Aquarius Records Record of the Week. This first tune sounds a bit like a trippy R.E.M. song — shiny arpeggiated guitars and a straight rock rhythm section. The tune unfolds gradually, centered around the guitars, with a noisy half-shred tossed on to arpeggiated guitars right before the dreamy female singer starts doing her thing. The guitar sounds are great, although the phaser sound gets a bit less effective the longer it goes on. I like what I’ve heard — I’m not jumping up and down but I like it.
@@@ Freedom Hawk: Into Your Mind (Small Stone, 2015). Aquarius Records describes these guys as Southern rock and I hear a bit of that, but I hear more of a riffy stoner rock outfit in this first tune. I mean the vocalist sounds like he could have sprung from Ozzie Osbourne’s loins so the stoner metal label is not a reach. Oh, this second tune gets more into a southern boogie rock kind of vibe, but not full on. The third tune gets into a more spacious ambient guitar jam so they’re mashing up a bunch of heavy music genres to get to where they’re at.
