8/9/15: Jasiri X, Miss May I, Chelsea Wolfe

@@@ Jasiri X: Don’t Let Them Get Away With Murder (Sankofa, 2015).  On the anniversary of Michael Brown’s murder, I saw this artist on Salon.  It’s a West Coast style hip hop tune and synth heavy in the arrangements.  The MC is gravelly and I like the lyrics.  I don’t love the tune, but I totally support the sentiment.  Fuck that redneck bitch Darren Wilson.

@@@ Miss May I: Deathless (Rise Records, 2015).  Described as melodic metalcore on the Beats highlights page, it opens up with arpeggiated electric guitar and then into the classic metal power chord action.  The singer is more post hardcore than metal Neanderthal — oh they’re doing that thing where it’s rough in the verse and then they have a sung chorus.  That’s the Linkin Park thing — art school metal.  Let’s check out a couple more tunes.  Same formula on the second tune.  I like the drummer and some of the guitar playing, but I don’t really connect with the production or the vocal arrangements.

@@@ Chelsea Wolfe: Abyss (Sargent House, 2015).  Some dark indie off the All Music notable email.  Opens up fuzzy bass, big toms, and medium aggro/partial industrial.  Then layer a detached female voice over that and you have the basic gist.  The first tune, Carrion Flowers, is a bit anal retentive sonically, but this second tune Iron Moon opens up spill-y, seg-way-ing into an alienated Radiohead pretty section.  It’s well put together and executed well, but I’m not feeling connected to it.  The spilling guitars are cool, but the whole thing smells a tad art school to me.  This is like watching woman walk down the street during a hurricane and her hair is completely unmussed.  Where’s the mess, the chaos?  Check out some old P.J. Harvey records if you’re lookin for the hot dark mess.
