@@@ Satan’s Wrath: Die Evil (Metal Blade, 2015). A little music for all the churchgoers on this beautiful summer Sunday morning. Opens up with a little epic intro before it launches right into the thrash. Sweet. Nice suffocating drum thwack, some power chord wash with a slow, repeating somewhat demented guitar figure back in the mix and a singer that sounds human, but a stressed out pissed human. The guitar player put some meth in his coffee, oh he be shredding big time. The second tune gets into more of a classic, rolling, nope they headed right back into the thrash. Sweet. Very buzzy guitar sounds, pleasant but not syrup-y with big doses of classic shred. Big respect to the drummer who is working his ass off.
@@@ Kate Tempest: Bad Place for a Good Time (Big Dada, 2015). Two songs off their new record that I got to via the CFUV weekly playlist email. The first tune is the title track with a British female MC doing some bleak lyrics over a minimalist, downtempo beat, and some ringing piano chording. That’s before it segues into a synth section with the chant, Bad Place for a Good Time. This is not your party hip hop, it’s pretty bummed out — let’s hear it for bummed out music. I don’t love the piano part, which lends a New Age vibe to the tune. The second tune, Stink, is absent piano and sports more urgency. I feel this more.
