@@@ Jill Scott: Closure (Blues Babe/Atlantic, 2015). A single track off Jill Scott’s new album that I saw listed in the All Music weekly. She’s going for a big funky r&b band formula on this track. Full horn section and man, Ms. Scott can belt it out with the best of the best in her genre. Shades of Stevie Wonder and D’Angelo. I would most definitely listen to more of this record but she’s not coughin’ it up and that’s her right. This is the best of what I heard today.
@@@ Ducktails: St. Catherine (Domino, 2015). Labelled as sophisti-psych on this week’s All Music notable release email, the record opens up slightly trippy and unabrasive with the tune, The Disney Afternoon. I didn’t know that one of the definitions of sophisticated is ‘slightly boring’. Let’s skip ahead. This second tune brings on the lead singer and is his pillow soft vocal stylings are not doing much to wake me up. Let’s skip ahead for our final listen off this record, Into the Sky. After a little bit of rockin’ we’re back in the soft acoustic strumming. There’s not much psych to be had here, and it’s not sophisticated, it’s just pretty standard indie schmock.
@@@ Jesse Hackett: Junk (Circle Star, 2015) Some off kilter indie funk off the Beats highlights page. At least the first tune, The Damp Run. Not super funky in the beats department, but the overall vibe is not one of rocking as such. If Prince had a love baby with the Steve Miller Band it would sound a bunch like this record. A bit stoned, a bit surreal, and a bit funky. The third tune, Buckle Down Bill, dials down the funk with a Devo-esque driving drum machine beat and waves of sounds and lyrics about some dude, Buckle Down Bill. A bit of a sonic want. I’m finishing up listening to this record with the fourth tune, I Don’t Want to Get Old, where he gets back to the weird indie funk flow. Solid B.
