@@@ MsMr: How Does it Feel (Columbia, 2015). Some mainstream pop off the Beats Highlights. The first tune has a female singer repeating: What do you think would happen? which sounds like a personal taunt. What did I think would happen listening to this record? I had to listen because of how it was described on the Beats Highlights page:
The New Yorker’s sophomore album highlights their nuanced bridge between synth-heavy pop-fueled tunes and some more reflective themes.
I’m on the second tune and it’s pretty standard electro pop with a B average singer. I’m yet to hear the nuance and the reflection. I might have been duped on this. Big synth-y arrangements and beats that are not club beats but not rock.
Ah, lied to again by the music business. What did I think would happen?
@@@ Son Real: For the Town EP (Black Box/Son Real). A hip hop EP I got to via the CFUV weekly playlist email. The first tune opens up with a sing intro before the MC enters with a quick flow over mostly West Coast beats with piano and strings in the arrangement. Mr. Real is a white boy — that’s not essential to the listening experience, just sayin’. I like the beats and the bass, I like the arrangements less, and while his flow is solid I don’t love his lyrics. Check it for yourself.
@@@ bbigpigg: Chowtime (Money Fire, 2015). Self described sewer punk that I got to via a music publicist. Guitar cachunk right out of a Rage Against the Machine, some squeaky ass siren like guitar wang, a basher behind the kit, a spaz on the microphone and just an assload of fuzz and static. Not metal, abrasive heavy punk. Nothing ground breaking just a good blast of anti-social noise to get you moving.
