Friday 7/17/15: Tame Impala, The Dustbowl Revival, Papoose, Dirty Ghosts

@@@ Tame Impala: Currents (Interscope, 2015).  Big, synth corporate rock off the Beats Highlights.  Hey, hey white people grab your bologna and mayonnaise sandwiches and head out on the dance floor.  Rock drums that are made to sound like mostly like drum machine beats, big waves of synth-y goodness and a big, sweet and melancholic vocal melody.  Let’s skip ahead, oh boy, this second tune Nangs is a plodding downtempo   number without the vocal melody and plenty of synth mod wheel jagging the track.  Thankfully a brief biscuit.  All right, last shot here and we’re out — this tune, entitled The Moment opens up with the super brisk poppy beat and finger snaps.  Finger snaps can often be the sound that gets me to the next record.  That was indeed, the moment I tipped.

@@@ The Dustbowl Revival: Lampshade On (Signature Sound Recordings, 2015).  A partyistic, modified hayseed single off an upcoming record that I got to from a music publicist email.  Uptempo beat, big call and response vocals, room for a mandolin and fiddle solos.  I don’t love the singer’s voice, but I dig the addition of horns to the tune that give it a New Orleans swagger and they’re workin’ pretty hard, check it out.

@@@ Papoose: You Can’t Stop Destiny (Honorable Records, 2015).  Some on fire, super spitting hardcore gangsta hip hop off the Beats Highlights.  Synth based and funky, the best you can do as a listener here is hang on and try to catch snippets of the ill lyrics at the insane tempo.  Yikes, Papoose is working hard.  The second tune is a mid tempo banger and Mr. Papoose continues with his gangster lyrics — this second tune is called You Ain’t Built Like That has a sung vocal, ‘you ain’t a gangsta, you ain’t a murderer.’  Funky synth based production, good beats, and the lyrics, well we’ve discussed those already.

@@@ Dirty Ghosts: Cataract (Burger, 2015).  A track off an upcoming EP that straddles indie electronic and hip hop.  This tune has been remixed by a gent named Tobacco and I should say the beats is smokin’.  The big video game synth bass is not nearly as smokin’ and the rock vibe is found mostly in the female singer’s approach.  Wow, these synths are smokin’ loud.  Maybe a bit too loud, and maybe I coulda used ’em served a tad funkier.
