Wednesday 7/15/15: Walter TV, Elida Almeida, BC Camplight

@@@ Walter TV: Blessed (Sinderlyn, 2015).  Off this week’s All Music notable release email.  A mid to down tempo indie bone with a couple heaping tablespoons of Quirk.  Very strange vocals, somewhat chanted and process a bit oddly.  Standard indie rock drumming with some classic clean electric guitar work that you’ve heard on dozens of classic rock/indie efforts.  The vocals are the freakshow here.  Things get crunchier and a bit less weird with the fourth tune Walter’s Kaya, with smashed drums spilling all over, messier guitar and the weirdo tucked in the back.

@@@ Elida Almeida: ORA DOCI ORA MARGOS (Lusafrica, 2015).  Some contemporary Afro-pop off this week’s WRIR playlist email.  Beautiful vocals, a pretty laid-back drummer, a fusion-y electric bass sound, some acoustic guitar and piano.  She’s from Cape Verde and the music I’ve heard from there tends to be mellower and poppier than the West African desert blues I really dig.  Almeida’s voice is gorgeous and rich, as is the production but I tend to be more of a dirt peddler, or at least I like the contrast between beautiful elements and muscular ones.  This might work for some of the Wall Street Journal readers out there.

@@@ BC Camplight: Grim Cinema (Bella Union, 2015).  A slacker folk intro that explodes into vintage early 1980’s crunchy pop rock (including a rare appearance by xylophone/vibes).  Duder is rocking mostly falsetto and he gets points for the stylistic mashup.  Part David Boo-ee, Rocky Horror Picture Show, a pube of the Foo, and a tad of Elvis Costello.
