@@@ Anne-Marie: Karate EP (Atlantic, 2015). Some mainstream white girl pop-tronica off the Beats highlights page. A little funky, a little weird, a little poppy. This first tune is about karate and love — like love is a fight or some such metaphorical. Ms. Marie’s voice is a couple notches above Britney Spears. I like this second tune, Gemini, better. It sports a better arrangement — she’s doing that orgasm breathing/panty creaming singing style. I find it tiresome, not sexy. Just sing the song honey pie. The third tune, Stole is a swirling, torch-y ditty with Ms. Marie continuing to oversing her material.
@@@ Character: Character (Hard Up, 2015). Described on the Beats Highlights page as an instrumental rock outfit, I hear no rocking’ I hear a synth based instrumental group. Not groggy, kinda clubby, a chopped feel to the beats and multilayered synths — synth bass, some flange-a-tating higher register lead synth and an occasional vocal sample. That don’t sound rock yo. I’m not sure what the dilly is with this record — to my ear they sound like club bangers — average club bangers. Maybe the Beats description is wrong ’em boy-o. Check it for yourself if you’re up for some hot summer average club banger.
