Saturday 7/11/15: R5, Carlton Melton

@@@ R5: Sometime Last Night (Hollywood, 2015).  It’s gonna be a beautiful weekend weather wise — sunny, warm.  And to make your weekend even better I beg you to not listen to this record.  I’m sure the musicians and everybody involved in making this record are great people and their intentions are correct but this is just corporate cheese.  Every cliche lyric you can imagine in this first tune, All Night.  There’s tambourine in the chorus, which is not always the best sign, and there’s the huge splat of a vocal hook in the chorus.    They must have spent weeks stacking all those vocal tracks and what for?  For nothing, to make me feel cheap and manipulated.  Oh Christ, this second tune Wild Hearts is painful.  If you’ve had a big cup of coffee and think you can make it out the cheese vat alive check the madness.  Blech blek blek.

@@@  Carlton Melton: Out to Sea (Agitated, 2015).  An interesting mash of prog synth, dirty ass hippie shredding and rock drumming, at least on this first tune Peaking Duck.  Think Phish with the Devo keyboard player and a stomping drummer.  Oh my, the guitar player is getting his shred on.  You go homie, dude, stimpin and stomping.  The second tune, Wheel and Deal, is a more driving riff — heavy but more on the stoner rock side than the metallic teeth grinding bone crushing tip.  Long, relaxed songs so fire up the bong or the chamomile tea, whichever gets you mellow.
