@@@ Raging Fyah: Destiny (Raging Fyah, 2015) Some pretty hot roots reggae perfect to piss off the redneck BBQ next door. Uplifting, non cheesy lyrics over a full band — percussion, thick rhythm section, background singers. The second tune, First Love, mixes smooth r&b in with the roots and as a rule I like to keep my smooth r&b separate from my roots reggae. Let’s skip ahead. The third tune, Africa, is a love ballad to Africa which I get but I don’t love the piano. I guess I’m a purist, I like my roots reggae just rootsy. The singer is great, the background singers are really good.
@@@ Evan Caminiti: Meridian (Thrill Jockey, 2015). An experimental guitar player record off this week’s Aquarius Records. The first tune, Overtaken, is a nice combo of drone and clouds done at a, wait it’s an intro piece and we’re into Curtains, the second tune. Nice slow motion with the thin ribbons of static moving left right with some metallic cloud on top of that and an abstract elephant roar on that and then a slow tremolo wave. Tasty. I feel this tune, let’s skip ahead and see what else he has in his pocket. This third tune uses different sounds but the same basic formula — multiple long slow, turning tones that push and blob against each other. I’m gonna swing back and check this record out more when I get the chance. Ooh, he’s getting a little more aggro here, Blade Runner-y and what not.
