@@@ Vince Staples: Summertime ’06 (Def Jam, 2015). Some California (or Kaleeforniya as Ahnild Schwarzenegger would say) hip hop I got off the Beats highlights page. The second tune, Lift Me Up, sports an awesome grizzly, fuzz bomb bass for Staples to rhyme over. Mr. Staples raps at an average pace, he’s not spitting at 60mph and he’s got a tad nasal thing going. I’m sure Miley Cyrus be feeling these banger beats in the club. He’s got trippy weird synths in the back of the mix and he’s a self-confessed gangster. The star here are the beats and the bass lines — boom stanky.
@@@ Hunter Hayes: Young and In Love (Atlantic Nashville, 2015). We go from the Long Beach hood music to the baloney and mayonaise white folks new country music. Everybody knows how freaky I think new country music is — he’s doin’ some Bon Jovi whoa-hoe-ing and he’s got the power chords on medium stadium setting in the chorus. This dude should be making artisanal applesauce, he’s really that sweet. I’ll take Vince Staples. God, when did American white people turn into shameless cheesemongers. Blech blech blech.
@@@ Shlohmo: Dark Red (True Panther, 2015). Some avant garde hip hop off this week’s CFUV weekly email. I was thinking that if Shlohmo started a queercore band he could call it Shlohmo and the Homos and that wouldn’t be offensive. I know it’s childish but it’s my fucking blog. I’m not sure what avant garde hip hop is but if it involves a lot of piled up synth squirbles and keyboard wang action then I must be in the right place. He’s got a couple of nice mental hospital samples in this second song Meet Ur Maker and he’s getting into a semi-funky quasi-old school drum ‘n bass beat. If Shlohmo ran down Broadway singing the Polish national anthem in Spanish I’d call that avant garde but mazeltov my good man, Shlohmo, cuz I’m a headin’ on down the road.
@@@ Doomsquad: Pageantry Suite (Hand Drawn Dracula, 2015). Off this week’s CFUV weekly playlist email. The first tune, Two Way Mirror, is an updated disco tune with an atypical disco singer. Duder sounds like he should be in a krautrock band but he’s here and he’s doing his thing over the standard funk guitar, driving bass line, congas, disco beat. Actually he gets more worked up as the tune goes on so maybe he was waiting for the espresso kick in. I like the various bleeps and blurps that are swirled into this rebranded disco biscuit.
