@@@ CHICO TRUJILLO: Reina De Todas Las Fiestas (Barbes, 2015). Some large ensemble hot traditional Latin music out the Andean region. Let me check that. Well he plays with some Andean music influence but he’s from Chile. Details. It’s a large chorus of singers with big swinging horn lines, thick electric bass and hand drums/whistles/hand claps. Oh this second tune is flavorful — funky, relaxed, tight, all the good things. I’m going to check this record out more when I get time to listen to the whole potato.
@@@ Breaking Benjamin: Dark Before Dawn (Hollywood, 2015). Some corporate heavy music off the Beats Highlights page. Seems like it’s a handful of mainstream hard rock and a handful of grunge. Lots of self-indulgent lyrics about feeling lost and the world dying, and the dark before the dawn. Poor sad corporate band, feeling empty, boo hoo. Me too when I hear these cliches. Oh, 4 million hits for this video, what a waste of bandwidth.
@@@ Richard Thompson: Still (Fantasy, 2015). Off this week’s All Music weekly email and I’m listening to this despite the involvement of Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy in this record. To me Wilco is akin to rat poison with it’s slackness. This first tune features some classic Richard Thompson guitar shredding. Some super sweet guitar tones and really good tunes — I’m going to check out more of this record as well when I get a chance. If you haven’t heard Richard Thompson’s guitar playing then you should check him out just for that.
@@@ Kacey Musgraves: Pageant Material (Mercury Nashville, 2015). Some new country from one of Nashville’s hottest female performers. It’s no wonder she would call her record Pageant Material. This first tune is good, not undercover rock, an absence of cheese so often tucked into these new country albums and she’s singing well. These are mostly low mid tempo non rockers with standard country band instrumentation. Slide guitar, acoustic, Sometimes life is surprising and this record is much better than I anticipated.
