@@@ Sun Kil Moon: Universal Themes (Caldo Verde, 2015). Some earnest indie singer/songwriter music I got to via the Beats Highlights page. I can’t place who the singer sounds like but he’s got a slippy-slidy voice a la many former indie big wig anti-singers. This first tune, The Possum, is a bit noodly and long, a common trait for the indie troubadours. I like this second tune, Birds of Film better — more lilting/orchestral and more interesting guitar work.
@@@ Gloriana: Three (Warner Nashville, 2015). Off the Beats Highlights page. It’s pretty amazing how the country music biz has rebranded classic rock as new country. The big guitar riffs and the giant vocal hooks are all up in this record. Of course, a core component of the reinvention is the use of banjos to redneck-ify the guitars. It’s really quite something, only in America. Not that it’s very good music — it’s full of all sorts of lyrical cliches, cheesy production, but I guess it’s good music to drink beer to. There’s all manner of cheese metal/classic rock pubes up in this bad boy — Def Leppard pubes, AC/DC pubes for sure, Bon Jovi pubes which is a little nasty.
@@@ Lapalux: Lustmore (Brainfeeder, 2015). Off last week’s CFUV weekly playlist email. It’s not crazy to expect something sexy from a record call lustmore, correct? We gotta a little space dive going in this first tune. Big pulsing booty bass, some chopped background vox — is it gonna rain men or what? I wouldn’t say this first tune is a total boner killer, but it’s more abstract than I anticipated. More downtempo and spaced out as well. Not super lusty, more of a SedateMore r&b/club thang.
