@@@ The Vaccines: English Graffiti (Columbia, 2015). Off last week’s All Music email. Not as retro pure as the Strokes and poppier these guys present listeners with a sweet, glam biscuit for their listening pleasure. The singer does well selling the material, the drums are big rock style and the guitars are fake rough/buttery/shiny. You will recognize more than a few melodies up in this package. The third tune, Minimal Affection collapses into sugary sweet treacle so I’m out.
@@@ Valet: Nature (Kranky, 2015). Off last week’s All Music ‘notable releases’ email. Opens up dreamy guitar/female vox indie. It then busts out into a mid tempo, upbeat rocker with a threedly guitar line floating over the big rock drums. A tad shoe gaze, a tad art school, a tad inserted up it’s own rock buttox. I’m trying to move away from the word pubes in my music reviews even though in some instances it is a much more powerful than a hair of this and a hair of this. I hope this record is designed to be snoozy-pants because I can barely finish up here.
@@@ Heathers: Tanker (Not sure, 2015) Retro-90’s guitar indie I got to via a music publicist. A little bit of classic rock with a whole bunch of the theme from Friends. What ever happened to Joey from Friends? He was my favorite Friend, followed by the ditsy blond. He was such an aw shucks kinda non-threatening goofball. This one’s for you Friend Joey, wherever you are!!!! Come and get it, ya big lug.
@@@ BOAN: Mentiras (Holodeck, 2015) This week I want to feature some of the music publicist language that gets sent my way.
Their highly anticipated debut LP Mentiras displays Cota & Saldaña’s skills to deconstruct, sharpen, and enhance idiosyncratic cold wave traditions by using all hardware electronics to sequence and arrange infectious live dance music.
Oh, fuck me. Enhance idiosyncratic traditions by using all hardware electronics? This is downtempo electronic pop with detached female vocals in Spanish with a few pubes of Krautrock. C’mon let’s not get too carried away with ourselves. I don’t think the publicist community does artists any favors rolling around town like that.
