@@@ 11PARANOIAS: Stealing Fire from Heaven (Ritual Recordings, 2014).  This has just been released on vinyl so somebody must be listening to these guys,  Maybe some hedge funders eating babies down on Wall Street.  Probably not.  The first tune has that creepy, whispered feeling of The End by the Doors.  Except with Satan.  The second tune, Paranoiditude, brings on the guitars and they are sludgy, buzzy, and a tad stony.  The singer has a pleasant old school punk howl.  The third tune heads back into the sparse, drum heavy rock so it’s gonna be a spread here.

@@@ Xibalba: Hasta La Muerte (Southern Lord, 2015).  Also off this week’s heavy metal mail-order.  All the song titles are in Spanish and Xibalba sounds like something Mexican but these guys are American and they are not fucking around.  Some thrash, some hardcore, some little bits of guitar shredding and just a whole lot of beating the fuck out of you.  I like the mix of musical influences here, I”m gonna circle back on this record.

@@@ Ajoyo: Idanwo (Ropeadope, 2015)  A tune off an upcoming record that I got to via a world music publicist.  Some jazz fusion guitar shredding, some Afro-influenced horn lines and a whole lotta Sade influence.  She lives!

@@@ Machine Gun Kelly: A Little More (Bad Boy/Interscope, 2015).  A slicked out corporate hip hop single which has surprisingly hip lyrics.  I was  more open minded until the power chords came in the chorus.  Anti-bullying, anti-corruption, anti-hopelessness, all good.  Shopping mall arrangement — no good.
