@@@ BKO Quintet: Bamako Today (Buda Musique, 2014).  A new release add off the WRIR weekly email.  There are big sound washes in the opener behind a traditional (kora, i think) stringed figure before the tune bumps up into a brisk groove.  I believe they’re rockin’ an electrified ngoni and I’m a sucker for that sound.  The second tune continues that groove with some circular ngoni playing and the plethora of vocals.  This is going on my listening list and I will check it out more fully.  The playing here is top nitch, tight, sticky and energetic.  Check this out.

@@@ Horse Lords: Hidden Cities (NNA Tapes, 2014).  Off an Aquarius Records music nerd best of 2014 list.  The first tune sounds like a funky version of Devo, including a sax player.  It has both a Talking Heads polyrhythmic vibe as well as a jam band vibe.  They also do some pretty nice electronic static sculpturing.  In a time where white and black musics are increasingly separated these guys are blending them together in an interesting way.  They add some percussion to the kit drummer and the squirgling and it’s pretty hot.  Interesting shit.

@@@ Goat: Hide from the Sun (Sub Pop, 2014).  Off another Aquarius nerd’s best of 2014 list.  I think I’ve heard this before but there has been such a tidal wave of psych music that it’s hard to tell.  You know the ol’ stereotype all the psych music sounds the same.  There’s some nice layering going on here with a tasty distort-o guitar shred solo but the psych revival (in my opinion) is more about bringing back a sound than it is about writing insanely great music that happens to also be psych.  Try on Axis: Bold as Love for some sounds and some songwriting.
